Recent research has supported the role of salivary hormone testing in the measurement of steroid hormones in the bloodstream. Saliva has proven to be an excellent medium to measure steroid hormones because steroid hormones not bound by the blood can freely pass into the saliva. It is known that approximately 90% of steroid hormones are bound by serum proteins and approximately 10% are unbound or "free". This unbound or "free" fraction is what is measured in saliva.
